Highlighted the sunlight is the austere, imposing street frontage of the dark-brown rendered bulk of The Granary, a modern block of flats built on the site of a former granary. This street frontage always reminds me of a Renaissance era palazzo in an Italian cityscape. Of course, the surface detail is different but the air of solid, dominant, aggressive impregnability is similar. Contrasting with the brooding bulk of The Granary is the bright, cheerful neatness of the short terrace of houses that form part of Custom House Square.
