The large stone on the left marks the boundary between the first and second stages on the Union Canal. The smaller stone on the right is one of the original milestones which appear every half mile and show the mileage to either end of the canal (to Hamilton Basin in Edinburgh and to the Forth and Clyde Canal beyond Falkirk).
