Sudbury was the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. The town is very proud of this connection and his childhood home is now a museum with a modern gallery attached. The Watering Place café is named after one of his most famous paintings which now hangs in the National Gallery.
