This is a new thing. This object sitting on the busy Euston Road outside the Pullman Hotel is a modern take on the drinking fountain and the top part is meant to represent a water drop. Users have to bring a receptacle to fill rather than drinking directly from the fountain. It is part of a joint scheme between the Mayor of London and Thames Water to reduce the use of plastic water bottles; about 7.7billion single-use plastic bottles are bought across the UK each year. According to the Mayor of London website: 'The Mayor and Thames Water will cover the cost of the fountains and their installation. They will be owned by Thames Water who will maintain and clean the fountains for 25 years (minimum)'.
