Tividale Aqueduct

A difficult location for photography! The aqueduct carries the Wolverhampton level of the Birmingham Canal over its Birmingham level adjacent to the northern portal of Netherton Tunnel. The present structure dates from the 1890s when the 1858 structure was rebuilt. Disruption to traffic must have been significant, though diversionary routes via the New Main Line were available. The iron pipes remain from a hydro-electric plant which powered lighting in the tunnel, and the central island was another of the gauging points for calculating tolls.
