The road over Standedge was first improved and turnpiked in 1759 (the Wakefield and Austerlands Trust), but by 1820 it was considered to be inadequate, and a completely new road was built. This stage from Marsden to Standedge curves around the northern side of Pule Hill and was opened in 1839. It was at this time that the cutting at the summit was excavated.
