The north facing southern pillar of the Eastgate has a bench mark and bolt at the bottom left hand corner. This mark is No.98 on the Newcastle-under-Lyme to Chester line first surveyed 1851-1858. For further details see http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm11314
