The site has been a religious centre since the 6th century when St Trillo founded a community here. The church was built as the private chapel of Ednyfed Fychan. The tower dates from the 15th century, and the turret was added later to serve as a vantage point to watch out for pirates. Most of the rest of the building in 17th century, and there are some interesting gravestones including that of Harold Godfrey Lowe RNR (1882-1944), 5th Officer on RMS Titanic, who is renowned for his efforts to rescue some of the victims of the sinking.
