For a few years this provided the experience of how canal boats operated before the advent of mechanical power. The tow rope is having to be held clear of other moored boats. The operation ceased sometime in the early 1980s. The boat is butty boat 'Betelgeuse', built in 1935 by Harland and Wolff for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company.
