The inn was opened in competition to others in the village around the 1840s - hence titled 'New'. Today it has a world-wide reputation as the home of the Turnip Prize. That is a local reaction to the (somewhat pretentious?) art world's Turner Prize, and awards the prize for the least effort put into creating art.
