The club was founded through adversity, as the story goes. Fred Forster was an enthusiastic cyclist and footballer in the early 1900s, but suffered a broken legduring a game. Whilst convalescing, he watched a bowls match in Portsmouth and was entranced. On returning home he asked the owner of the large house to use his garden, who laid out three rinks. Hence the club was founded in 1903, now playing on the green just opposite the originals.
