Considering that huge numbers of poor people in Victorian London lived in degradation and squalor in the so-called rookeries of the East End, this sort of model housing must have offered something akin to paradise. The aim of the construction was to "combine in the utmost possible degree the essentials of healthfulness, comfort, social enjoyment and economy" and as a result the infant mortality rate dropped rapidly. The dwellings are still in great demand today.
