This pub on Lower Gungate is named after a former prime minister who was MP for Tamworth from 1830 until his death in 1850. He is best remembered for founding the Metropolitan Police - and the affectionate 'bobbies' nickname for police officers comes from Peel's first name. He also bred Tamworth pigs - leading to a less affectionate name for police officers.
