The preserved section of tram track dates from before the closure of the Birmingham Corporation Tramways (BCT) in 1953. BCT had a gauge of 3ft 6in. It was the fourth largest tramway system in the UK after London, Glasgow and Manchester. At its maximum extent it had 843 trams, 20 depots, 45 main routes and a total route length of 80 1⁄2 miles (129.6 km).
