The original building was built as a row of terrace houses and was known as Cochrane Buildings. It became two hotels, with Ocean Grove Hotel to the left and St Helens Hotel to the right. The Ocean Grove ceased to be and the entire building became St Helens Hotel, which was owned by William Donald (a Provost of Largs). In 1982 William Donald sold the hotel and it was renamed Brisbane Hotel and is now known as Brisbane House Hotel.
