Opened in 1840 by the York & North Midland Railway, later part of the North Eastern Railway, on the line from York to Normanton, this station closed in 1871 when it was replaced by the current station, some 400m behind the camera position (see Image View northeast at the site of the entrance building and platforms. At the time the station was open, Bridge Street consisted of only the nearest two lanes. The three storey entrance building would have been in front of the parapet and to the right of the car. It contained stairs up to platform level, the platforms having been on the far side of the bridge. The widening of the road means that no trace of the former station survives. The Normanton-York line was still in use when this image was taken.
