Following the reorganisation of local government in Dorset, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council no longer exists and these offices are surplus to requirements. The building was originally designed to resemble a paddle steamer (a type of vessel that has a historical connection with Weymouth), but was spoilt by later extensions. The circular tower atop the building was nominally the 'funnel', and more practically a home for water tanks.
