Opened as a wartime military airstrip in 1941 as RAF Crosby-on-Eden, following cessation of military use in 1947 the airport became a municipal airfield renamed Carlisle Airport and belonging to Carlisle City Council. Subsequently sold and renamed again, it is now Carlisle Lake District Airport but has no commercial passenger flights.
