This C19 pub at the foot of St Michael's Hill is not named after a native of Caledonia but after the man whose job it was to 'scotch' the wheels of horsedrawn carts to stop them slipping down the hill. The wooden wedges or scotches would be carried in a pack for the purpose and must have been needed frequently here in this steep street.
