The church is now somewhat hemmed in by the dual carriageway, but retains a good impression. It was built to a design by Benjamin Ferrey - a student under Pugin - and finally consecrated on June 21st, 1855, by Bishop Henry Philpotts of Exeter. The North Lady Chapel was erected in 1883 by Mr Charles Norrington, at the time church warden of St John’s, as a memorial to his son Harold. During the Blitz of WWII, the church was one of the first victims of bombing, destroying the windows; the church was finally repared by 1955. Grade II listed.
