A picture taken on the day in 1968 when the new Scott Polar Research Institute buildings were opened by Larry Gould, President of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). The flowers were not to become a permanent feature of the library. Beside historic and academic books on polar affairs, the library had an enormous archive and manuscript collection accessed by cards in the card filing cabinets in the foreground of the picture.
