The New Pheasant and the Gardeners Arms

Two public houses on Market Street, Haddington. The New Pheasant was once the Black Bull. It was later The Pheasant before becoming a restaurant - Jo's Kitchen. It changed back to a pub, The New Pheasant in 2018. The building is Category B listed https://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB34321. Next door is the Gardeners Arms. The pub has been closed since 2018 and there are proposals to change its use to a shop with flats above. It is 18th century in date and Category B listed https://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB34322. According to information in the East Lothian Courier, the name for the pub dates back hundreds of years, as The Fraternity of Gardeners of East Lothian was once based in the town. They purchased a property on a corner of Market Street which contained an inn, which is still known as the Gardeners Arms. The mural on the first floor depicts the square, compasses and pruning knife as would have been used by gardeners.
