A blue plaque reveals that this historic building was formerly the Woodland Cottage and Old Hayes. It states that the first iteration was a late mediaeval thatched house of 1598, owned by Exeter merchant Sir William Peryam. By 1806 it was owned by Lord Gwydir (1754-1820), who was able to afford some major extensions, most of which we see here. More alterations in 1855 removed the thatch and replaced it with tiles, and the Italian decorations installed. Grade II listed.
