The blue plaque reads: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOMAS BOWYER A WEAVER OF GREAT DUNMOW HE WAS BURNT AT THE STAKE IN STRATFORD-LE-BOW ON 27 TH JUNE, 1556, AGED 36 YEARS FOR ADHERENCE TO THE PROTESTANT FAITH He was one of eleven men and two women - the 'Stratford Martyrs' - who were apparently burned in the same fire.
