This is the first of the remaining stepstone milestones on the route from York to Driffield. It was dug out in 2008 by two Milestone Society members but has been damaged by the vere cutter since then. On the back the legend is in an incised oval YORK/III/MILES. There is evidence of a later plate, lost, fixed over this inscription. The legend on the front which has eroded away was YORK/4/MILES. There is a benchmark on the step.
