The paving slab here reads "Paved by the Mayoress | 1937 | Coronation King George VI". The Mayoress of Aldeburgh in 1937 was Ethel Harriet Lewer, formerly Garrett (one of the Garrett family whose engineering firm, based in Leiston, was a major employer in the area). Her husband, the Mayor, was Sidney Herbert Lewer, who held the office from 1936 to 1944 and again in 1946.
