This is the parish church of the original village of Basildon and the immediate area surrounding the church still manages to maintain a slight rural atmosphere, which is mainly evident when approaching the church from the south along Church Road. Of the church, the nave is 14th century and the chancel was rebuilt in brick in 1597.
