Elliott & Garrood Ltd, were marine and general engineers and had a foundry close to this spot. When the business which was recognised for inventing the steam capstan, closed in 1974 after a hundred years in the town it stood empty for a while. It has now been developed into a gated community (not to everybody's liking) for the retired. The part of the factory on Gosford Road are now occupied by retail businesses and can be seen here Image]
