Former Rope Walk in Beccles

William Piper was a rope maker who had his first rope walk on the north side of a field in Gaol Lane (adjacent to the Caxton Club Bowling Green). When land was laid out as the main approach to the Railway and was named Station Road he moved in 1858, and secured a field for some years in Ravensmere, but the growth of the town compelled him to move again to here near Denmark Road, where he remained until about 1897 when he retired. He died aged 84 years in December 1902
