Chestnut Walk runs along the bank of the River Kennet towards the remains of Reading Abbey. The wall on the right was part of Reading Prison (or Reading Gaol) until its closure in 2014. The prison is best known for holding Oscar Wilde between 1895 and 1897 - he subsequently wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol which described the execution of a fellow prisoner.
