This is the Weigh House, Grainger Market, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Its purpose in the 19th century was to check the weight of purchases and was once a legal requirement for all markets. It is located in Alley 1 of the market and is still in use today for weighing people (for a small fee); the customer simply steps on the plate and receives a ticket stating the customer's weight from the operator. It provides a useful printed weekly record of weight for members of slimming clubs!
