Because the name Shipwreck Alley, a packway and footway, has been lost in the mists of time these cottages are now officially in Fair Close, but were in Shipwreck Alley when they were built in 1822 by Barrington Purvis esqr. He built these as almshouses for the poor. Shipwrecked mariners perhaps?
