The top of the ancient market cross of Stalbridge: for a monument of several centuries it has survived remarkably well. Despite the ravages of the elements, market crowds, Cromwell's troops in the Civil War, a visit by John Wesley in 1766 (and his subsequent pelting by villagers!), and the Luftwaffe of WWII, it had not been badly damaged throughout. Sadly, that luck ran out during a storm in the winter of 1949/50, which brought the top down. The present finial is a modern replacement which is slightly shorter. Grade II* listed.
