The gasworks when operating belonged to Mr James Malam, and was erected in 1837. They had one gasometer of 10,000 cubic feet, and supplied 108 street lamps, paid for by the Corporation. Supplies also ran into the following contiguous villages. Barsham, Gillingham, Geldeston, Ringsfield and Worlingham. The works ceased operation in the mid 1960s. It is currently a storage yard for Travis Perkins building materials
