Provost Mitchell's first spell of office in Montrose, Angus was between 1864 and 1869. The drinking fountain, in the town centre, which bears his name and the date 1869 relates to that time. As a youngster, I often drank from the chained cup but that was removed many years ago and the fountain is no longer in use.
