Mechanics' institutes were set up in the early 19th Century to provide social space, reading rooms and educational opportunities for workers as opposed to 'assembly rooms' for the 'gentry': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanics%27_institute . This fine example in Brechin is B-listed (LB22459 https://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB22459 ) and is now a community hall.
