No-mow May has allowed a drift of silky, feathery Wall Barley (Hordeum murinum) to sway and ruffle in the breeze. (No-mow May was a national exercise in leaving grass uncut to allow wild plants – 'weeds' – to grow and flower to provide nectar, pollen and seed for insects, and to allow the plant species to persist and spread. Probably promoted by wildlife charities, No-mow May was adopted and implemented by local authorities and many other organisations with responsibility for land. It left a mass of tall grass to be cut in June and later – or never.) Photo number 7567352.
