This was probably the location of The Magpie public house, before Darby's made it their offices. That was before this part of Bridge Street and Northgate and Beccles town centre was made into a one-way system in the 1960s. On the opposite side of the road, between here and the bridge was The Maltster's Arms which was attached to the former brewery. The Waterman's Arms which closed in 1929 stood at the bottom of Fenn Lane.
