Ordnance Survey documents describe a benchmark levelled at 284.588 feet above Liverpool Datum during the 1841-1844 Liverpool to Carlisle 1GL Survey on top of a gatepost at this gateway. No mark could be seen on the right hand gatepost, so perhaps it was on the left hand gatepost whose top is missing. The surveyor's description was 'No. 292. Mark on top of gate pier ; 5.09 ft. above surface'
