This is the variegated form of Arundo donax, the Giant Reed, seen in Image It is "the largest native European grass which may reach 5 m and is bamboo-like. Distinguished from bamboos by the single leaf arising from each node and clasping the stem." (Oleg Polunin. Trees and Bushes of Britain and Europe. Paladin paperback, 1977.) Bamboos are grasses too, from Asia, the largest having woody stems bearing leaves on side branches. Image reference: 7544231
