Carpinus betulus is the Latin for the Hornbeam tree. This almost forgotten remembrance stone, lost among the housing redevelopment, sits beneath a hornbeam that looks to me to be at least thirty years old and so I assume that John Longland died young during or shortly after his teacher training at Middlesex Polytechnic. In 1985 there would have been roughly 450 students on the teacher training course at the Trent Park site. The polytechnic became Middlesex University and the site was closed in 2012.
