This marker is from the days when the General Post Office was responsible for the telephone network as well as the mails. It is a cable joint marker and would have originally, with inset numerals, given the depth at which the cable joint lay. This example in Jockey Road, near to Buckingham Mews, is remarkably well preserved despite the number of years it has been here. The GPO was replaced by BT (British Telecommunications) in 1981.
