This fine black mulberry tree, Morus nigra, once grew in the back garden of a house on Spon Street in the city centre, and now occupies a brick-walled raised bed by a car park outside the Odeon cinema. The tree can be seen growing vertically in the centre of the picture, but also almost horizontally off to the left. Stephen Falk thinks it is one of the largest mulberries in Britain, but that its multidirectional growth habit - it has about a dozen stems - makes it difficult to compare to others; see his The Trees of Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull, Part 1 - Introduction, p26, at researchgate.net https://www.researchgate.net/publication/349339646_The_Trees_of_Warwickshire_Coventry_and_Solihull_Part_1_-_Introduction . To the right can be seen a lime tree and the two-storey brick houses of a court extending off Spon Street at a right angle; these house the Coventry Watch Museum Project, as this was historically a watchmaking area.
