Although St Alfege's Church was a medieval foundation (Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were both baptised at its predecessor) the present church dates from 1711 - 1714 and was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It included much carving by Grinling Gibbons but this was largely destroyed in the Second World War and replaced by more modern wood. This board is in the gallery. Intriguingly, amongst the large benefactions such as £600 from Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton and £100 from Sir William Hooker "towards the building of Mr Roan's School", the last one is simply "From an unknown hand a Velvet Cushion and Pulpit Cloth." See https://st-alfege.org.uk/Groups/298239/Heritage.aspx for much more information.
