Although St Alfege's Church was a medieval foundation (Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were both baptised at its predecessor) the present church dates from 1711 - 1714 and was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It included much carving by Grinling Gibbons but this was largely destroyed in the Second World War and replaced by more modern wood. This view looks towards the altar at the east end.
