After a series of murderous attacks in the small hours of the morning, parts of the city were cordoned off, guarded by large numbers of police officers. Three people had died from stab wounds in two attacks, and the assailant had also driven a stolen van at people queuing for an early-morning bus, one of whom was very seriously injured. Pedestrians could use Goldsmith Street to reach the city centre but vehicles, including trams (whose service was suspended), could not.
