It isn't obvious what purpose the black mat at the bottom of the picture is for. I think it must be for pedestrians as there isn't much room on the tarmac, and the narrow pavement that is there has lost its kerb. If so, it is still necessary to move back onto the tarmac to get through the level crossing however. Kingsknowe has a very short platform on its Westbound side (to the right). Announcements are always made on trains longer than three carriages informing passengers that the doors will only open in the front three.
