As seen from the Weardale Way, looking over the Chester-le-Street Golf Course. Built for Sir Ralph Lumley in around 1390, it remained in this aristocratic family for most of the timeline until around 1800, where it became the residence of the Bishops of Durham. It also housed students of the newly formed University. In 1976, Lumley Castle became an exclusive hotel.
