When Bawdeswell School was built in 1875, it only had a playground, and no field. Some years later, the field behind the school was bought from a farmer, to use as a playing field. An outdoor theatre was set up in later years- with hedges for the wings, etc! When Bawdeswell was bypassed in the 1970s, the new A1067 road went behind the school field, and the roar of traffic made it impossible to use the outdoor theatre. The theatre area has now been returned to a flat grassed area.
