The pillar sits a short distance from a small rural road that is interrupted by a pedestrian-only level crossing, effectively making it a (quite popular from what I saw) footpath on this short stretch. It is easily got at, unless you worry about horses. Give me horses over cows any day though! Officially in operation from 1943, its height is 117 metres. The odd-looking thing in the distance is the roof the 'Oriam' - a fancy sports hall on Heriot Watt University campus. A lot of its space is taken up by a full-size indoor football pitch, which is the biggest in Europe. According to their blurb the pitch dimensions match those at Hampden, Scotland's national stadium; visiting foreign teams sometimes hire it out to sharpen their skills in relative comfort before invariably having to play their big games in the cold and wet.
